Night Mirror
Summary
Text by Klimentini Vounelaki
With her first choreography Vasso Giannakopoulou attempts to record the content of the unconscious, when Self enters with the Other. In other words, she tackles the controversial yet actual issue of love and human relationships. How can one fall in love in the year 2003?
Giannakopoulou’s staff of interpreters includes three actors and two dancers. They all move about a versatile staging set reflected on “the night mirror”. Again, in this work speed of change undermines communication. As the characters unfold themselves, we notice that they bear elements bordering “grotesque”, on the edge of comic. They get distressed or embarrassed, often cannibalistic, when the meeting with Other makes them feel insecure. All action takes place in a space constantly transformed, a space that lays down conditions and multiplies challenges – most often against our own will. In Night Mirror a bitter humor is lurking behind the individuality torment.
